Football Practice

Today was an interesting day here in Stirling. Every Wednesday, they feel the need to test out their fire alarms at 10:13 in the morning. Today, like last week, I almost jumped out of bed when the thing went off. There is an alarm in every single room and they scream like sows that want to bite your head off. I was very angry at the thing and almost ripped it off the ceiling.

After I cooked a delicious breakfast, I headed over to my first CS lab session. I was not expecting these to be difficult, and my intuition proved correct. I couldn’t actually log in to the CS systems, so while they were setting that up for me, I just read over what I was supposed to accomplish. We had to make some directories in the command prompt, start up a web server, and add 3 lines to a bit of Java code. After 45 minutes of waiting around, they finally brought me my credentials and I was able to log in. The only thing difficult was getting used to the new layout of the keyboard. The rest took me 10 minutes. Thankfully, these are only every other week. After showing the result to the TA, I headed out!

(American) football practice started at 1:30. After meeting a few of the guys on the team, an injured player and the team secretary took me over to the storage shed and got me all my pads. Once I got suited up, we headed back to the field. As I’m a slow guy, I opted for the line. The same injured player stepped me through he basics before I re-joined the team in drills. Once I’d gotten several hits in I mostly had the hang of it… Once the drills were over we started running though the plays. Thankfully, they were patient with me learning them. I was surprised at the simplicity of the plays, but then I guess this is Scotland, not Texas. Eventually we started playing the defense, and while I certainly had a few miscues, I thought I held my ground fairly well.

Unfortunately (probably fortunately for Mom), they only have two games left and I’m going to miss one of them while I’m in London. I’d play for that one game if it wasn’t going to cost me £50 to join the team and another £20 to join the sports union. I did have a lot of fun at the practice, but that just isn’t worth it...There would be other benefits to joining the team too: the coach owns Dusk, one of the popular clubs in Stirling, and several players work there! Oh well…

…they scream like sows that want to bite your head off…

Best … analogy … ever.

Football sounds like fun. Considering they didn’t even have the Super Bowl on TV here, I doubt I’d even be able to find a pigskin with which to play.  We do have basketball though.  And cricket.

I also enjoyed the analogy! Perhaps you need to cull many of those alarms Tholt? I wish I could go and visit both of you guys. I'm still laughing that the Mumbai weather forecast constantly says "smoke." Bholt, have you tested out your basketball skills in Pune yet?!
